You can do more with your website than just having fun and learning as you go. You can turn your website into a revenue earner. In short, you can also make money from your website. Now, not evey website is or should be a vehicle for increased earnings, for instance, in my opinion at least, sites put up in memoriam of an individual or individuals. But most sites do have revenue potential.
Google AdSense
Google AdSense is another smart , some would say revolutionary, innovation by Google. AdSense is designed as a win-win for Google, Advertisers and Website owners. AdSense is free to join. It is a pay, and get paid per click scheme in which advertisers place their ads in Google boxes, banners and images and website owners, in turn, place those ads on their website(s). Each of the ads is customizable (to a large degree) by the website owner. The website owner can choose the shape, size, and color of the ads and can also choose between image only ads and text only ads or he/she can opt for a combination of text and image ads. The ads that appear on your site will be goods and services related to the content of the page you place them on. If they are not immediately relevant to your page content don't worry. Google says they (eventually) will be. There are two kinds of Adsense opportunities, Adsense for Content and AdSense for Search. In Adsense for Content the owner of the website places the ads on his website pages and gets asmall amount of change for each visitor's click on the ads or links.
In AdSense for Search, which is the option I like, the owner places Google search boxes on his or her website, no more than two per page, and the owner is paid per impression and click on the ads generated by the search terms. The two things I like about AdSense for Search is 1) you get to offer a genuinely useful tool to your vistors 2) The owner of the website enjoys some artistic control over the AdSense search boxes. You can customize the search result pages to appear in any color combination you wish and the Google AdSense for Search boxes come in three colors, white, gray or black.
Google makes joining AdSense easy and chances are you will be accepted into the program provided you comply with their Program Policies
If you are accepted into the AdSense program (and you usually are) Google will automatically generate for you a customizable box, banner, skyscraper or rectangle containg image and/or text ads related to the content of the web page on which you want to place the AdSense ads.
To get an idea of just what kind of ads Google will use on your site, type the url of your page into the box below and press Enter. *You'll be taken to another site*
Selling products and services online is difficult if you don't have any products or services to sell. Never fear. There is an affiliate program for you to join provided you have a website that meets certain criteria which are usually not that stringent. As long as your site does not contain adult or gambling content, and is related to the products and services you want to sell, you are likely to be accepted by the company.
When you become an affiliate of a company, you are in effect, entering into a partnership, a mutually beneficial, partnership with that company. In this partnership you are known as the affiliate (obviously) and/or the publisher. The company is known as the merchant or advertiser. When you enter into an affiliate relationship with a certain company or business, you are really agreeing to become a satellite or an extension, if you will, an employee of sorts, of that company. You, the website owner or "publisher" place the company's text links and banner ads on your site and get paid a commission for sales generated through those links and banners.
Sales are generated on your site when visitors see a banner or text link of your affiliate company that interests them and click on it and follow through on the click by purchasing your affiliate's product or service.
Commission rates range from 1-3% for items like computers to as high as 70% for some software programs. Some companies stagger their commission rates paying you more (and more) per sale as you sell progresssively more. In other words, the more you sell, the higher your commission. Most companies will bonus you for a large number of sales in a specific, usually short, period.
You can go two ways when it comes to signing up as an affiliate: the underworld (for lack of a better term) route, e.g. pornography and/or gambling, or the mainstream route in which you can sell a broad array of products and services for companies ranging from WalMart to Interstate Batteries.com to 1-800-PetMeds.
You are making a big decision if you go the underworld route because that means you will be able to sell only for underworld companies. Most, if not all, of the mainstream companies require that your site contains no pornographic material and gambling services and/or links to them in order for you to join their affiliate programs. So it's either or.
Being an affiliate takes time, skill and patience. You have to have a site that is up and running, live, as they say, and no longer under construction. You have to lay your site out in such a way that your affiliate banners and links do not intrude upon your visitors' enjoyment of your site. Your site has to be more than a collection of affiliate banners and links. It must contain (substantial) original content or else most companies will not accept you as an affiliate and you will attract very little traffic to your site. The most important aspect of selling online is promoting your website. Making it visible. No traffic equals no sales. So you should set aside some cash for advertising and promotion of your website. Get into other site promotion schemes such as link exchanges and joining webrings.
Your site should also be related to the products and services you wish to sell.
The best case scenario is that you are genuinely enthused about the products and services you are selling. That makes all the difference. You have to like, if not love it.
I remember how excited I was when I first got the idea for a website and shortly thereafter realized that I could sell (almost) all the products and services that I found so interesting like antivirus and antispyware programs and website building tools and web hosting plans ( I'd like to be able to offer my own web hosting service someday) to name just a few.
Try, if you can, to join the companies' affiliate programs directly through their website. Some companies allow you to work with them directly which means no third party affiliate network can take a cut of your commissions. If you don't try to join their affiliate programs directly through their websites, your chance of having to work through a third party is increased. Be prepared, though, to settle for a third party even if you apply through the company's website. Some companies can't be bothered to run an affiliate program on their own so they farm it out to places like Commission Junction.
There are lots of affiliate networks out there that run companies' affiliate programs. I joined the two on the left. I had to join LinkShare in order to be an affiliate of McAfee. And I had to join Shareasale in order to sell ESET's NOD32 antivirus program.
Some of the better, more reputable affiliate networks are:
