Tech Support sites and forums represent everything that's right about the internet.
They are an under sung resource on the internet.
If you want to pay a tech to come to your home to look at your PC, you're looking at a bill of some $30-60.00 USD at a minimum. You will pay the same amount, or likely more, if you choose to take your PC into the shop.
But if you're willing to take the time to go to a PC help forum, register and post your problem, you will get a helpful response, usually more than one, in fact, that will either solve your problem or set you well on your way to solving your problem. It might take more effort than hiring a tech, but nine times out of ten (if you're patient) you will get the answer you need.
And, as a bonus, you will have acquired some very useful knowledge which you will be able to build on and apply to other PC problems you have in the future.

Lots of help and info for the PC and Internet user here. Forums include:

Really good forum. Lots of activity.
It's part of the new Help With Windows.com site which provides not only this forum but also posts the latest Internet, PC and Microsoft news headlines.
Interestingly enough HelpWithWindows.com is a creation of Rose City Software Which makes a number of first rate software programs including the multi-award winning Registry First Aid and TweakMASTER
How-to guides, safe downloads of free top-notch software and a host of useful Tips and Tweaks are among the reasons to spend some time at PC911.
Tek Tips Forums are some of the very best forums on the net. Anyone can benefit from a trip to Tek-Tips but it is especially for IT Pros.
I'm happy to say that I've partnered with Tek-Tips to provide these forums for visitors to my site. The categories I have chosen are the ones you will most likely want to visit. You can sign up for the forums or sign into them right here. Please let me know if I can be of assistance or whether you have gotten the answer(s) you were looking for at the forums. |

Protonics is an online bank of volunteers who make it their business to answer technical PC related questions fast and effectively, for free. You get help by registering and then submitting your question through an interactive interface to the website itself. As you submit your question their software collects info about your PC (NO personal data is collected) which they use in determining the answer to your problem. They then review your question and get back to you with a solution.
Protonic has won a number of
awards for their outstanding virtue and service. If you can, make a donation. It's worth it. If you're good enough at tech stuff, you can also
join their team
They also have a discussion board where you can comment and get feedback on a number of issues from Tech to Politicsto Almost anything.
I really like PC Pitstop, especially for beginners. They've really gone commercial but they've kept their core service. In fact, they regularly improve it. It's a good place to benchmark, diagnose and fix some of the more common PC/Internet safety issues. It's also free! You can get some good help from the folks at PCPitstop in their forums.

Bleeping Computer also offers some very good and well run help forums including a Hijack This forum which I have found useful in a pinch. I especially recommend their computer tutorials section. |
| The Process Library by Uniblue is probably the premier place on the net to find out just what it is that's running on your PC. A process, also known as task, by the way, is a software program that does a single task. Some processes are part of the operating system. Others load at boot-up or are initiated by the user when starting a program. The Windows Task Manager shows you which processes are currently running on your PC. To start the task manager, right-click an empty space on your Taskbar (at the bottom of your screen) and click on Task Manager or hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. |

|
| If you see a process you don't recognize, type it into this search box and hit Search Now! to get info on it.
