Find What You're Looking For

One of the most frustrating things about internet travel can be punching in a search term, word or phrase and clicking on a search result that takes you to a page where you can't seem to locate the search term(s) you want. There's a solution. Hit the Edit menu in the upper left of your IE or Firefox window then Find (on This Page...) in IE or Find in This Page... on Firefox,(or CTRL+F on your keyboard). In Firefox, a slim window will appear at the bottom of your window with a small search box in which you can type your search term and press Enter on your keyboard or Find Next etc.
For Windows Internet Explorer the procedure is similar. In the box that appears in front of you (not at the bottom of your window as in Firefox) type in your search term(s) and hit Find Next until you have found the subject of your search. In IE the term, if found, will be highlighted in blue. In Firefox the term will be highlighted in green on the page.

One note here: for what it's worth, I've used both Find features in IE and Firefox and I have found the Firefox Find feature much more useful. IE just misses sometimes.

If you use the Google Toolbar, enable the Highlight and Word Find features. Just click on the Options button on the toolbar , then the More tab. Under Find on Page tick Highlight and Word Find. Now whenever you go to a page looking for a term, you don't have to scroll up and down endlessly. Just click on your search term that on the right of the toolbar and it will go to the first instance of that term on the page. Click on the yellow marker icon and all the instances of that term will be highlighted in yellow.

Yes, You Can take them with You! Make your Favorites portable

Keep your favorite websites just one click away at all times by dragging its icon in the IE address bar down to your Links bar ( sometimes that's just the little blue "e" IE icon). If you can't see your links bar, right click on an empty space on your IE interface and put a check beside Links. Now pull out your Links bar by clicking on it and using the little black 4 way arrow to move it to a place ( I recommend the bottom ) on your IE interface.
All you have to do now is simply click on it's link in your links bar and off you go!

By the way, You can move various features on your IE bar around and even add or delete them. Just as you did with your Links bar, click on that feature, i.e. your Google toolbar or your IE address bar and stretch and drag these features around until you've got your desired interface. To delete or add a feature on your IE interface, right-click on an empty space and put or remove a check beside the feature you do or don't want on your IE interface.
You can do the same thing by going to View at the top of your IE interface and rolling your mouse over Toolbars. Once you've got your IE interface the way you like it, right-click on an empty space and put a check beside Lock the Toolbars.

Here's a neat service. If you really like a site and want to keep up with the latest developments at that site, you can subscribe, for free, to ChangeAlarm. Sign up and they will notify you by email whenever a change is made at your favorite website. It's good for reminding you about sites that you like but have temporarily forgotten about. "Oh Yeah...That site"

This is kinda fun. If it's your birthday or the birthday of someone you know, submit the birthday to World Birthday Web and let the whole web celebrate it with you! The only downside is you have to have the permission of the person whose birthday you wish to celebrate so it kind of reduces the whole "surprise!" thing. Still, lots of fun can be had. The person can always pretend they didn't get the verification email or, better still, connive with a relative of the birthday boy or girl so as to make it look as though the lucky person got the verification email. But you didn't hear it from me!

Free Software

Don't be deterred by the term "free". There are a lot of first rate freeware programs out there. Many companies and individuals offer their software for free, some out of the goodness of their hearts, and others for less thoughtful reasons. The big drawback to freeware is that 99% of the companies and individuals who make the freeware do not offer much, if any, support for their free products. Usually, you have to rely on tech forums and trial and error in order to solve problems you are having with the freeware. One other shortcoming of freeware is that you don't get the extra functionality and features of the payware versions. For example, Ad-Aware SE does not provide real time protection, but its payware "brothers" Ad-Aware Plus and Ad-Aware Pro do.

On the other hand, if you are tech oriented and internet savvy, a freeware program can be very useful. In addition, you don't have to worry about going through the refund process if you are not satisfied with the free program. Simply uninstall it and move on. Not that there's anything too onerous about the refund process. Most companies are pretty reasonable and straight forward with their refunds. I have never had a problem getting a refund online.
There is no shortage of good freeware programs.

Here is a sample:

  1. Zone Alarm firewall
  2. AVG Antivirus
  3. Firefox Browser
  4. JAP - Anonymous Surfing
  5. TheOpenCD
  6. Google Toolbar
  7. Picasa
  8. Eraser
  9. Pegasus Mail
  10. Reg Seeker
  11. CCleaner
  12. Microsoft Power toys For Windows XP
  13. Process Explorer
  14. Spybot
  15. Shareaza - Spyware-free P2P Client
  16. Ad-Aware
  17. Win Patrol
  18. K9
  19. Open Office
  20. HTTrack - A nice little site mirroring tool.
  21. MailWasher Server
  22. OpenBSD
  23. Linux
  24. Wine
Allows you to run Windows applications on Linux without having to pay for a license. And it's Legal
  25. FTP Commander
  26. eXTReMe Tracking
  27. Thunderbird

**One cautionary note here. If you do download free software, and most of us do at some point, make sure it is not accompanied by a lot of adware and spyware. If you see programs or features that you didn't want when you downloaded your free program, press "Cancel" or "Abort" and get the program somewhere else. The downloads from this site are clean. Two sites that really try to keep their downloads clean are Tucows and Cnet's DOWNLOAD.com . Another, Softpedia puts a malware free" certification logo along side the program to assure you of a clean download. As I said before, if you see anything setting itself up during the download that you don't want, cancel the download. If you really want to contribute to the internet community, notify the website where you tried to download the program that spyware and adware are attending downloads of that program. Make sure, too, that the site from which you are downloading the file(s) scans the files with an AV, a good one. If it doesn't, find download site that does or download the file to a floppy or, more likely, a CD/DVD (floppies are too small for most programs) and scan it yourself with your own (updated) AV.

If you want to avail yourself of the many free tools software programs out there without having to go to a lot of different websites, you can go to one of the numerous online repositories of free software. Here iare a few of the more reputable ones:

Data Security

One of the easiest ways to lose valuable data stored on your PC is to have your PC be disabled by a virus or software conflict. If your system freezes or crashes, chances are you will not be able to recover your lost data unless you are an advanced user or can afford to have a PC tech take a look at your PC.
There are a couple of ways to prevent this catastrophe. One is to write your data to a floppy disk or CD/DVD and keep it in a safe place. The other way to secure your data is to open an online email account and send your data there. If your PC freezes or crashes, your info will not be affected. I do this with receipts and other emails containing sensitive data or info. In my next section I will suggest a short list of free web based email accounts.

Free Email

Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express are pretty common among PC users. Outlook Express is free bundled with Windows and is connected to Internet Explorer. Outlook 2003, which I use, is expensive and good. However, if you don't want to spend a whole lot of money on an email program, I suggest you try one of these free email programs which don't have the bells and whistles of Outlook but provide plenty of functionality and ease of use for the average e-mailer.

Here are some of the most popular free web based email and all of them have more than enough storage space for even the busiest emailer:

Yahoo! Mail   Hotmail  Opera Web Mail   GoMail

AOL Mail  Gmail   Lycos Mail   Netscape Mail
